End Piracy, Not Liberty

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 18, 2012, 9:09 PM

SOPA and PIPA aren't just bad news for internet companies and creators, they're bad news for us all and disastrous for this country. SOPA and PIPA are the wrong way to combat internet piracy. They're the digital equivalent of fixing a roach problem by burning down the whole building.

So I decided to write my representatives in government and let them know where I stand on SOPA & PIPA. You can let your reps know where you stand in 3 easy steps.

  1. Type your zip code in here to find out who represents you in government.

  2. Write a letter (or just copy and edit mine).

  3. Paste letter and hit send.

Don't let SOPA & PIPA happen! You have my permission to use, edit, re-post and send the letter below to your elected officials.

My letter to my elected officials

[link]

Dear elected official,

SOPA and PIPA will effectively destroy the internet in this country. Destroy the free exchange of knowledge; destroy the online communities in which we congregate.

Under SOPA and PIPA I and everyone I know will be branded criminals, not because we are evil greedy internet pirates as the people trying to push this law through would lead you to believe. But hard working Americans whose only crime, if you can even call it that, is sharing a funny picture across the internet or honoring our favorite creators with a piece of fan art.

Under SOPA and PIPA people would have their online worlds and communities torn down and destroyed WITHOUT due process. SOPA and PIPA would effectively give large media companies the ability to take down their smaller competition by essentially calling pirate in much the same people used to call witch. Small sites and individuals won't have sufficient resources to defend themselves if they are given the luxury of due process which they won't be as the laws are currently written.

Passing SOPA and PIPA would cause a Dark Ages of the internet in this country and would do more harm to our financial stability and growth than any Depression, pandemic or war could ever do. SOPA & PIPA wouldn't hurt or even hinder the foreign pirate sites that the laws were designed to combat. It will however effectively destroy the internet in the United States.

Don't get me wrong internet piracy and IP theft should be stopped; but SOPA and PIPA just aren't the right cure for the problem. Unless cure suddenly started meaning dousing it in gasoline and hitting it with a flame thrower.

Do yourself and our country a favor and look into better legislation like the OPEN Act instead.
Because let's get real on what SOPA and PIPA are really about; misplaced anger at a changing world and greed.

Don't be responsible for effectively destroying this country. Vote NO on SOPA and PIPA.

Sincerely,

Alicia Kat Dillman

Creative Director of KatGirl Studio

She could have been a perfectly normal, albeit a breathtakingly beautiful girl, but she wasn't, for I knew there were secrets hidden behind her eyes.

Seventeen year old Patrick Connolly has been drawn to Nualla ever since he first saw her, but as the years pass she seems to take absolutely no notice of him. Until, that is, he rescues her from a confrontation in the school hallway. DITM Visual Novel Update 1

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 12, 2011, 1:52 AM

Daemons in the Mist Visual Novel

We started production on the Daemons in the Mist Visual Novel this past week. The novel engine was designed by the fantastic team at CWS Software and with their help I will be creating the vast majority of the Visual Novel myself.

Yes you heard that right, I will be the writer, artist and coder for the visual novel version of Daemons in the Mist. This means I had to learn the game engine that CWS uses for their games. So I spent the better part of two days reading the manual and working with one of the lead programers. I was able to walk away with a least an understanding of how to code the visual novel. I'm not saying I'm an expert or anything, and I'm sure that once I actually start coding the VN I may run into some problems. But that's true of learning any new computer language or engine (trust me I know four already).

Aside from learning the needed coding I also started breaking down the book similarly to how one would break down a book that is being translated into an animated film. Because other than movement visual novels and animated Features are pretty much the same. Good thing I have all those "art of" books right? The text all has to be broken down into script form since the text will be similar to close captioned shows and movies. And just like an animated show or movie I have to figure out how many backgrounds will be needed, how many expressions for each character is needed and how many outfits they all wear during the course of the story.

On a side note, because Daemons in the Mist is a long YA novel (over 90k words) we have decided to release the visual novel in serialized sections. We are still discussing whether to release the 55 chapters individually or in chapter bundles.

Daemons in the Mist

In November 2010 Kat took part the NaNoWriMo challenge and wrote the bulk of Daemons in the Mist, a Young Adult, paranormal romance novel set in modern day San Francisco.

Here's a little blurb about Daemons in the Mist:

She could have been a perfectly normal, albeit a breathtakingly beautiful girl, but she isn't. For I know there are secrets hidden behind her eyes.

Seventeen year old Patrick Connolly has been drawn to Nualla ever since he first saw her, but as the years pass she seems to take absolutely no notice of him. Until, that is, he rescues her from a confrontation in the school hallway. Little does he know that he's about to be thrust into a world of life altering secrets and things that shouldn't exist, because the fog and mist of San Francisco are concealing more than just buildings.

Deliriously captivating and extraordinarily soulful, Daemons in the Mist beautifully weaves together two voices to tell the story of what happens when life leads you down a not so normal path.

You can see the finished cover art, book trailer and an evolution of the artwork here.

Interview for LM Preston

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 10, 2011, 8:50 PM

Guest Spotlight

Here is a re-post of the interview I did for LM Preston's blog [link]

Tell us about your upcoming book? Some of your other projects?

I actually have three upcoming books if you can believe it. Two picture books and my debut novel Daemons in the Mist.

Daemons in the Mist is a Young Adult urban-fantasy paranormal romance novel set in modern day San Francisco. Here's a little blurb about it that's on the publishers website.

Little does he know that he's about to be thrust into a world of life altering secrets and things that shouldn't exist, because the fog and mist of San Francisco is concealing more than just buildings.

As for other projects, in late spring I will be turning my novel Daemons in the Mist into a Visual Novel for the game company CWS Software. I've never done one before so it should be an awesome experience. If you don't know what a Visual Novel is you can learn more about them here. [link]

I'm also in the scripting/story boarding phase for a full color graphic novel and a wordless picture book.

How long did it take you to illustrate the cover for your upcoming book?

It took me about 3 days to paint the cover for Daemons in the Mist. I actually drew two sketches for the cover but decided that the character (Nualla) looked too passive in the first design and she is anything but passive.

I included a process animation for the cover here. [link]

You also write MG/YA books, can you share a bit about them?

Most of my stories are paranormal or magical in some way. It's the stuff I like to read and so it's what I create. But I don't like to play in other people's sandboxes so I tend to make up the creatures that are in the stories.

Some of them are simpler stand-alones but one of them COR, is a complex four book epic. COR's a project I have been working on since 2003 whenever I have free time. I built their world from the ground up, the calendar, creatures, races, religion you name it. It even has its own wiki which will be made public when the books are published.

You are also a talented artist how do you create your art?

I used to create my art differently but currently I work 100% digitally. I do my work in Painter 11 mostly with brushes I created myself. I usually work in a 4 layer process; sketch, ink, base, details. First I sketch the illustration in blue digital lead. Then I turn the opacity on that layer way down and ink over it on a new layer. When that's complete I turn off the sketch layer since I won't be using it again. Then I create a layer under the ink layer and do my base painting. Lastly I create a layer on top of everything to do my details. You can see visual examples of this process here. [link]

In what formats, other than books, do you sell your art?

My personal artwork also appears on postcards, buttons, greeting cards, jewelry, clothing, and on prints and Giclées. My work for clients has been on clothing, websites, wedding invitations, instructional pamphlets and any number of other products. Come this summer my artwork will also be in Visual Novels.

What great projects have you worked on as an illustrator?

Wow I've worked on a lot of projects but I would like to think that the best is yet to come. The projects I'm working on right now and the other ones coming out this year are going to be some of my best work.

Please share something quirky about yourself?

I have a rather large collection of small and miniature stuffed animals. I have a good 34 in my studio alone. I have always loved stuffed animals, mainly because the idea of playing with miniature people (dolls) creeped me out as a child.

What was the inspiration for your main character(s) in your book?

The short answer would be music. When I listen to music I see stories; like small movies playing in my head. But in reality I do not create my characters and give them things to do. They create themselves and in turn tell me their stories. I feel more like I am eavesdropping on their lives than directing them.

How was your way to publication paved?

I'd say difficult. I graduated from the Academy of Art in 2008, considered by most to be one of the worst years in economic history. There seemed to be no work to be had and no one was hiring. But in the last few years things have steadily gotten better. Interestingly all the publishers I have worked with found me instead of me querying them. One of my current publishers, Flinders Press, found me through the Illustrators showcase at the SCBWI Summer conference for example.

The first book I worked on that actually made it to publication was Lions in my Tummy which came out last March from Viscus Vir Publishing. This year however I have a least 3 books coming out.

Do you have any other books coming out?

I do, two in fact. Neither has announced a solid release date but both are scheduled for early fall. One, The Koi Who Cried Wolf, is a creative retelling of the classic story and is the second book I will be illustrating for Viscus Vir Publishing. The other book coming out is Lazy Saturday Afternoon, a hilarious book in song written by songwriter Bryant Oden and will be published by Flinders Press.

What do you like to do when you're not writing and illustrating?

Historical re-enactment, cosplay, mini bookbinding. I have been involved in historical re-enacting for over 10 years now. I used to do a couple different types but now I only do the Dickens Fair. For the re-enactment and cosplay I make all my own costumes and patterns.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I had to look up and research a lot of things for Daemons in the Mist from how long a broken arm takes to heal to electronic paper. But the most interesting was probably how retro-viruses work.

What would you like to tell your readers?

To my future readers, I hope that I have created worlds for you that extend outside the page. That the characters will stop being characters in a book and start being people; friends you might meet on the street.

How can we get our hands on your books? Your Art?

The books will be available through all the standard digital channels (ie amazon, B & N online, Apple etc.), through their respective publisher's websites and select retailers. And of course you can visit KatGirl Studio for more info on each book and where you can get them.

All my art is currently available through my website. [link]

Secret Project Revealed

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 19, 2011, 2:35 PM

Kickstart Our Launch

Hi viewers we just launched our first project on Kickstarter! It's my debut novel that I wrote for NaNoWriMo this year.  Daemons in the Mist a Young Adult urban-fantasy paranormal romance novel set in modern day San Francisco. I am currently finishing up the novel to be edited for publication and it will be our first release at Korat Publishing.

Book Blurb

Here's the back copy blurb for the book:

Artwork Evolution

This past week I illustrated this book cover for the book. You can view an evolution animation of the process here.

Artwork in Motion

My awesome twitter friend Merrie Destefano, told me about this great site that lets you make music videos using their special software. It's really perfect for book trailers wouldn't you agree? You can watch the book trailer I made for Daemons in the Mist here.

The Making of a Picture Book

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 7, 2011, 7:53 PM

Late last year I was contracted by Flinders Press to illustrate a picture book. The picture book, Lazy Saturday Afternoon, is a story in song by Author Songwriter Bryant Oden, creator of the extremely popular Duck Song and is slated to hit shelves Fall 2011.

As a special treat to KatGirl Studio fans, Flinders Press has graciously agreed to let me share some of the process of what goes into the creation of a picture book. This process will be serialized here in my studio blog, so head on over if your curious =^.^=

The Ripple Project

Art Cards for a Better World

Many of you have no doubt heard about the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill that occurred recently. This left many feeling helpless as to how to help. Well illustrator Kelly Light has created the Ripple Project for artists the world wide. Artists can now donate gulf wildlife themed artist cards to the Ripple Project to help benefit the wildlife victims of the oil spill. Each card is sold for $10 and 100% of the proceeds go to The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center.

Please visit The Ripple Project and donate today! I have donated 11 cards so far (most of which sold in only a few hours) So if you would like a card by me you'd better flock over to The Ripple Project.

Edited: 7/19/2010 12:12pm  My cards sold out in a matter of hours again so I will try to create and donate some more. In the mean time please look at the lots of other cards available and please donate to the cause if you can!

A little More About the Art

5 out of 6 of the pieces I donated are the first 100% digital paintings I have ever made, both drawn and painted on the computer. Using Painter's excellent brush software I created a pencil that had the look and feel of the blue lead I draw with normally outside the computer. It's nice when artistic experiments can benefit animals. You could say I'm saving two birds with one hand.

Fanime was awesome thing year! Thanks to everyone who came by to see us. The Fanime Staff did a fantastic job and we can't wait till next year!

Deviant Art Meet-up

Thanks to everyone who came to the first ever meet up on Sunday night. It was nice to meet so many deviants in real life. We took all your suggestions and will make next year's meet-up even better! We will be starting a DA group just for Fanime Artists where you can submit works to be used in a slide show we will be running next year while the meet is happening. This way we can spent more time actually socializing amongst each other. If you have any other suggestions please feel free to comment or note us.
