A character study of Captain Greyfur and Mister Whiskers from my story If Fishes were Wishes. This version of the character sheet features turn arounds of Captain Greyfur and Mister Whiskers.
This is the same character from this [link] illustration though updated for a new project.
Medium: blue lead with mech. pencil on Canson vellum with PainterX and Photoshop CS4 Project: The Art-a-thon Challenge & Character Study
This is a very impressive job. When picking the cat's color scheme, did you intentionally use cool colors? Also, I like the texture you put on his jacket. The textures throughout the character have my eyes traveling all over him (I mean that aesthetically, of course), and coming to a resting point at his eye. On the topic of texture, the feather in his cap has nice soft edges, and doesn't look hard at all.
One suggestion:add more light dispersement to the lens of the telescope. That's really the best I can offer. Your work is just too awesome.
In the interest of my own self-improvement, what part did Painter X and Photoshop play.
sadly no, the story is still being written and may take awhile since my other book, stalking the Elusive quetzal, will be completed first. I decided to write a story based on the Dancing by Moonlight picture because people seem to really love the character.
The cats color scheme (fur and eye colors) is based on our pet kitty Crash the Stampede who is a Korat. The only difference is that Captain Greyfur has a non striped tail unlike Korats. Thank you I try hard to make my painted textures look nice.
I scan my hand drawings into Photo shop (as a TIFF) and do any clean up work. I then open the saved TIFF in Painter X and do all my painting with 2 brushes (though they are modified). After that I clone the file save it as a new TIFF and open it in Photo shop for page layout and printing.
